Etching is basically printing from an etched plate. The polished metal is coated with wax or varnish then the drawing is drawn into that surface and
the plate is put into acid, which etches into the drawn marks. The varnish
is then cleaned off and the etched lines remain. The plate is then inked.
When it is ready it is put on the bed of a press and covered with damp paper.
This passes through the rollers of the press so that an imprint of the drawing
is transferred to the paper. Sometimes single prints are made but usually
an edition is printed. Many prints can be made from the original plate. |
